Civil Appeals
When an individual seeks to appeal a final civil judgment or order from the district courts of Oklahoma, such an appeal is brought before the Oklahoma Supreme Court. Once an appeal is lodged in the Oklahoma Supreme Court, once the appellate record is completed and once the appeal is fully briefed by both parties, it may take anywhere from six to eighteen months to receive a ruling from the appellate court. Depending upon the type of case involved, the Oklahoma Court of Civil Appeals, as an arm of the Oklahoma Supreme Court, may adjudicate the appeal.
The procedural process for an appeal in the Oklahoma Supreme Court is complex, and it is critical to obtain a civil appeals attorney and appellate litigator who is thoroughly familiar with the Rules of the Oklahoma Supreme Court and who can readily navigate the civil appellate process. The failure to meet required deadlines, including jurisdictional deadlines, can jeopardize the civil appeal and can result in complete dismissal of the appeal.
